Hangzhou, China… Home of the e-commerce giant Alibaba, the UNSECO designated site of West Lake, the 2016 G20 summit and the upcoming 2022 Asian games. A thoroughly modern city that one can trace back over 7,000 years. We had the pleasure of staying there for about a week, first as participants in the International Animation and Game Business Conference and then to spend some downtime to process the previous ten days whirlwind Canada Trade mission.

Here in the West we seem to fixate on the idea of ‘irreconcilable differences’ between East and West. But having spent significant time in China over the past three years, I can say that there is a conspicuous discrepancy between how China is generally portrayed in Western media and the reality on the ground.

A Time of Rebirth

As we took our place among the thousands assembled in the park along the Qiantang River to watch the evening light show, I found myself immersed in the general feeling of positivity that permeated the crowd.

After the show we walked around the safe, clean downtown area, found a wonderful restaurant and then took the subway back to our hotel to get ready for the next day of business. This is a time of rebirth in China and what a pleasure it is to experience it firsthand.
